The event will be moderated by Ivan Rupnik from Northeastern University in Boston.
Columbia University GSAPP Presents their fourth conference on architecture, engineering and materials March 30 to April 1 at Wood Auditorium in Avery Hall. Permanent Change: Plastics in Architecture and Engineering explores the boundaries between architecture, engineering and materials science by mobilizing symposia, studios, exhibitions, books and films in an intensely focused investigation.
Dédalo magazine, a student based publishing project developed by the Oporto University Faculty of Architecture, has organized a lecture series for March 31st through April 2nd. The series, entitled dis:Place: Deviations on Architectural Practice, intends to explore the (de)contextualizations or (inter)relations within contemporary architecture, and thus understand the more complex issues of site/place, dissecting the meaning of movement and exchange, both physically and ideologically. The lectures will be held in Oporto, Portugal, at the Architecture Faculty of Oporto’s University and offer a varied panel of international lecturers.

Pacific Design Center is pleased to present MonoVisioN, a selection of photographs from design and architectural photographer Scott Frances. The exhibition, on view from March 22nd to April 29th, is located among the Design Loves Art Galleries on the Second Floor of the Blue Building at the Pacific Design Center in Blue Space 231.
Frank Harmon, FAIA, principal of Frank Harmon Architects PA in Raleigh, will be the featured speaker for the AIA Lecture Series in San Antonio, Texas, on March 30, beginning 6 p.m. in the historic Pearl Studio conference center on Grayson Street.
Awarded by the Interior Design Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), the prestigious Lawrence Israel Prize for 2011 has been awarded to David Rockwell. Given annually to an individual or firm whose ideas and work enrich FIT Interior Design students’ course of study. Past winners include Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis, Billie Tsien, and Charles Gwathmey.
Pratt Institute School of Architecture will feature four lectures this month as a part of their 2011 Spring Lecture Series. Architects and Artists will lecture about their influences, works, and careers at the Institute’s Brooklyn and Manhattan campuses. The lectures are free and open to the public.
Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) will launch Studio-X Rio this week with Dean Mark Wigley in attendance. Studio-X Rio is GSAPP’s global network of advanced research laboratories for exploring the future of cities. With locations in Amman, Beijing, Moscow, Mumbai, New York, and now Rio de Janeiro, it is the first truly global network for real-time exchange of projects, people, and ideas between regional leadership cities in which the best minds from Columbia University can think together with the best minds in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia.

On March 21, 2011, London architect John Pawson will present the 2011 Harwell Hamilton Harris Endowed Lecture at NC State University in Raleigh, N.C. This annual lecture honors the late, former professor of architecture who taught at NC State from 1962 to 1975. Upon his death in 1990, Harris left to the College of Design an endowment that funds this annual lecture.
“Material beyond Materials: A Composite Tectonics Conference on Advanced Materials and Digital Manufacturing” combines progressive presentations in the fields of architecture, the arts, engineering and materials research. The conference participants will present and discuss their most innovative ideas, projects and positions concerning materials, technology and the impact on the architecture and construction disciplines and professions.
This presentation will be held March 9, 2011, 7:00PM at the SCAD Auditorium located at 1600 Peachtree Street North West,Atlanta GA 30309.
The event will be part of the closing ceremony of the ACSA conference which this year takes place in Montreal. The lecture will be followed by a reception where professionals from leading architectural practices will be present.

Driehaus Foundation, the Enterprise Foundation and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the eleventh annual “Structures for Inclusion (SFI 10 + 1)” conference will be held in Chicago on the 25th – 27th of March 2011.
“SFI 10 + 1″ will unite activists, designers, funders and policy makers as change agents to address the most pressing design challenges of the world today, challenging participants to integrate positive change design in their own practices. Going above and beyond the green design movement the “SFI 10 + 1″ will confront design processes to consider the broader social and economic well-being of communities and cities.
Opening the conference on March 25th will be keynote speaker Patrick Tighe of Tighe Architects. The conferences keynotes, panels, and workshops will also include the participation of Tom Fischer Dean of the College of Design at the University of Minnesota, Andrew Freear Director of Rural Studio, and Sergio Palleroni of BaSiC Initiative, Trung Le of CANNON Design, Christine Gaspar of Center for Urban Pedagogy, Quilian Riano of DSGN AGNC, and Michael Zaretsky Co-author of New Directions in Sustainable Design.
The SEED Design Awards, an international competition highlighting Public Interest Design, will be integrated in the “SFI 10 + 1″ as the winning recipients, featured after the break, will partake as key proponents in the conference experience.

Kent State College of Architecture and Environmental Design recently shared their Spring Lecture series with us. This series includes speakers such as Elena Manferdini of Atelier Manferdini. All lectures are free admission and begin at 7pm, locations vary.

Preventable communication mistakes happen daily and the worst ones even make global headlines. Now, more than ever, our methods are overtaking our messages. In this program, we’ll examine how to communicate effectively, what works and what doesn’t, the best practices and the worst stories.
The School of Architecture Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute shared with us their Spring Lecture Series. Lectures are held at EMPAC beginning at 6pm with free admission.
The AA Visiting School is a worldwide network organized by the Architectural Association School of Architecture in collaboration with each country they visit. They have conducted events and workshops all over the world, and we’ve covered their visits to Tehran, Muscat, and Mexico City.
In spring 2011, the AA will hold its first Istanbul Global School in collaboration with the Istanbul Technical University. This 10 day long intensive team-based workshop, taught by recent AA graduates/ AA staff, will explore tall structures through vertical growth algorithms by focusing on local crafts.
