Architecture Schools Events: The Latest Architecture and News

As we all know, natural disasters continue to kill hundreds of thousands each year, and the vast growth of cities with unsafe and unreliable buildings and other infrastructure will only increase the cost of human life and negatively impact local economies. To address this, The Campaign for Safe Buildings, along with The Rubin Foundation and the Yale School of Architecture, is hosting a symposium November 4th and 5th to look closely at safe building initiatives around the world and many of the challenges that stand in the way of keeping natural disasters from turning into man-made catastrophes. As part of As part of the series of Architectural Workshops by Architects and Designers series by Ajman University of Science & Technology, Eric Owen Moss will be presenting a workshop titled, ‘Who Says What Architecture Is?’ from November 14-17.

Taking place at the Yale School of Architecture gallery from November 14th-January 27th is the Gwathmey Siegel: Inspiration and Transformation Exhibition which is the first museum exhibition devoted to the work of Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects, one of the most influential architecture firms of the modern period. Business and interior architecture students of Woodbury University present: 2011 ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY – BUSINESS + DESIGN SYMPOSIUM Saturday, October 29, 2011, 10:30-5:30. This year’s symposium will focus on sustainability within the scope of business and design.

The metropolitan area of Los Angeles is facing many environmental, infrastructural and socio-economical challenges in the 21st century. In order to address these, different sustainable concepts and technologies are being developed and successfully implemented. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute recently announced the speakers for their fall 2011 lecture series which kicked off on September 7th with Joel Sanders and ends with Stephan Kieran on November 30th. Admission to all lectures is free and will begin at 6pm. The location is in the EMPAC / The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media + Performing Arts Center. 5710 (Fifty Seven Ten) Society recently announced their lecture series for 2011-2012. The series kicks off with an opening party on September 29th and runs until April 26th.

The lecture series will be held at The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and The Built Environment in Aberdeen, Scotland. It is a non-profit organisation run by students, which invites guest speakers to lecture in the School. Speakers are usually practicing architects of interest to students and to the school, and the society aims to create a link between architectural education and architectural practice. However, lecturers are also invited from related disciplines such as art, architectural photography and interior design. More information on the event after the break.

Pratt Institute School of Architecture and Latin Pratt, a student research organization, will present “Breaking Borders: New Latin American Architecture,” an exhibition highlighting contemporary architecture of the past 10 years from 45 firms representing more than 10 countries in Latin America from September 8 through November 30, 2011, at the Hazel and Robert H. Siegel Gallery at 61 Saint James Place in Brooklyn.

The exhibition and opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on September 8 are free and open to the public. It is curated by Ivan Rumenov Shumkov, Ph.D., adjunct associate professor of undergraduate architecture, and Andres Chavez and Julio Martinez, both students in Pratt’s undergraduate architecture program and founders of Latin Pratt. The Board of Education for the School of Architecture in Lund, Sweden, has together with guest Professor Sir Peter Cook, prepared the small Celebrating Architecture Symposium, on September 9, 2011.

The aim of this symposium is to create a dynamic dialogue where architecture, design and education are the main focus. With the help of merited guests, they are hoping to achieve a broad spectrum of dialogue and an innovative approach to progressive architectural education.

Miami University Department of Architecture and Interior Design recently announced their Fall 2011 Architecture and Interior Design Lecture Series, which began on the 24th of August and runs through the 14th of November.

Ajman University of Science and Technology announced that there will be an architectural workshop by the renowned architect Will Alsop to be held at the university itself (AUST), UAE, during the period of September 20-24, 2011.

Tulane School of Architecture has announced their 2011-2012 school year lecture series featuring Rafael Moneo, Billie Tsien, Adam Yarinsky and others, including a string of lectures on Urban Innovations co-sponsored by The Murphy Institute. More information on the lectures after the break.

The Department of Architecture at Portland State University proudly announces its inaugural lecture series, titled ‘Firsts.’ The series spans the 2011-2012 academic year, beginning October 6, with presentations by six notable academics, artists and professionals in architectural practice worldwide: Petra Kempf, John Ochsendorf, Gilles Saucier, Jeremy Till, Sarah Wigglesworth and Paul Pfeiffer.

The concepts of origins and beginnings, long a subject of interest among architects, will be explored throughout the series of lectures. As the Greek word Arche (meaning ‘first cause’) is at the root of the word architecture, the guest lecturers will discuss their own ‘first causes’—the spark that led them to follow their career path—as part of their presentations. The lectures in the series begin at 7pm in the Shattuck Hall Annex at Portland State University (at SW Broadway and Hall Streets) and are free to the public.
