Pilkington UK, a leading provider of advanced glass solutions, has significantly contributed to the renovation of Whitechapel Station’s elevated concourse in London, United Kingdom. Pilkington Pyroclear® Plus, renowned for its fire-resistant properties, was selected for this pivotal project to ensure safety and enhance the station's modern aesthetic.
The Project
The Whitechapel Station Concourse project is a key element in the extensive refurbishment of the Elizabeth Line, a major upgrade aimed at improving London’s transportation infrastructure. The concourse, a 50-meter elevated structure, plays a crucial role in managing passenger flow through the busy travel hub. The design incorporates advanced glass to allow natural light into the space while providing a sheltered passage for commuters entering or exiting the Elizabeth Line. This ambitious project required integrating high safety standards set by Transport for London (TfL), including rigorous fire resistance testing to meet the stringent regulations for elevated walkways.
Product in Use
Pilkington Pyroclear® Plus was specified for the concourse’s barriers, addressing both structural and aesthetic requirements. The glass panels, held within wide horizontal metal frames, create a seamless glazing around the elevated walkway, including sloped inclines necessary for transitioning passengers between different levels. A notable challenge was accommodating the required 15° incline, surpassing the standard 10° tolerance. Pilkington Pyroclear® Plus underwent extensive fire-resistant testing, enduring temperatures up to 1000°C for 90 minutes, ensuring it met the necessary 30-minute performance standard even under increased stress. This advanced glass not only ensures passenger safety but also contributes to the station's bright, open environment, enhancing natural ventilation and providing views of the surrounding area.
Peter Jenkins, Architect Director and Head of Transport at BDP, remarked on the project’s impact, stating, “Whitechapel station feels very different from other underground stations. The daylight, natural ventilation, and open environment create a welcoming ambiance, allowing people to enjoy fresh air and views while preserving the area's unique historical features.”
