The renovation project of the Zumarte Music School in Usurbil, Gipuzkoa, aimed to modernize and expand the historic space while enhancing its integration with the surrounding landscape. Driven by the Usurbil Town Hall, the project sought to enhance the conditions of the Zumarte Music School, housed within a 19th-century villa with a garden, which had become outdated in meeting the school's needs. The strategic use of Egoin's wood solutions played a central role in realizing these goals, offering warmth, sustainability, and structural efficiency to support the existing building.
0S3 Arquitectura opted for Egoin's laminated and cross-laminated timber products to create new floors and the roof while employing larch frames and custom paneling for the exterior facades. Even the elevator, constructed with CLT elements, showcased the project's commitment to innovative timber solutions.
The building incorporates measures for renewable energy generation and consumption, as well as natural elements such as green roofs to maximize natural light utilization. Through this renovation, the Zumarte Music School has transformed into a remarkable center, serving not only as an educational institution but also as a social hub and landmark of the Gipuzkoan municipality. Egoin utilized 220 m3 of sustainably sourced radiata pine and larch from the Basque Country for the construction of this new space, mitigating the emission of 170 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
