The new South Gales Hospital designed by BVN architects uses the Flexbrick ceramic facade system to narrate history into the modern building. The project aimed to tell the story of the Wonnarua, who were the indigenous stewards of the land on which the hospital was built. To convey this the facade uses pieces of terracotta with different tonalities to create dynamic patterns. The patterns are an allegory representing the culture of these people.
To achieve this representation the architects collaborated with the community, a local aboriginal artist Saretta Fielding, NSW Health Infrastructure, LOHAS Australia, and Flexbrick. The design also includes a pergola creating a sheltered walkway for pedestrians as they make their way to the main entrance.
