The original Municipal Theatre of Corfu designed by C. Pergolessi at the end of the 19th century and destroyed by German bombers during the Second World War. In its place a modern building was erected in the 1960’s which unfortunately did not meet the aesthetic and functional expectations of the citizens of Corfu. This proposal, brought to ArchDaily by Zerefos Tessas Architects is for the Renovation and Extension of the Municipal Theater of Corfu, Greece to provide a more appropriate architectural identity through the building.

The imposing architecture and monumental scale of Brussels’ landscape are some of the characteristics that establish the personality of the city. A distinctive example of the aesthetic architecture that orients and at the same time governs the area of its presence is the Law Court. This proposal for the future formation of the Law Court of Brussels, Belgium by Europe Studio Architects moves in parallel to the existing frame and function of the building and proposes the re-establishment of the internal system that made this court a public social space in addition to its political and judicial functions. The monumental and programmatic aspects of the building will be preserved, with additions of cultural functions such as gallery and exhibition spaces.

The cultural facility will be located in the landmark geographic and social center of the city plan of Yongjia, China. The design is approached at an urban scale to provide a symbolic gateway between the past and present development of the city.

The Art and Archeological Museum in Vale do Coa, Portugal by CVDB Arquitectos is an entry for an International Public Competition hosted by the Portuguese Archeological Institute. The project is located on a relatively secluded landscape and creates a establishes a strong connection between the natural and built forms on the site.
DawnTown Miami is an annual architecture ideas competition meant to bring creative and inspiring new solutions to Downtown Miami. This year’s winners have presented a variety of solutions for a new event space on a historic site. The competition called for a Floating Stage that was to become a new structure to compliments the existing Miami Marine Stadium.

The Solar Park South International design competition awarded French firmsOFF architecture , PR Architect and Samuel Nageotte for their entry called Verical Villages in Calabria, Italy. The competition played with the theme of a ‘Solar Highway’, re-using sections of the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway soon to be decommissioned by the Italian Highways Authority. The redevelopment of the viaduct section of the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway was carefully considered by the architects for each of its components in order to best integrate the project with the site’s potential. The fundamental question posed by the competition is that of the readaptation of such sites and the possibilities of atypical redevelopment socially, culturally and economically for the region.
About an hour car ride outside of Madrid, Spain, is a tiny rural village that just a few years ago had high hopes for an abundant housing market. Yebes is now an example of the economic crisis that has affected the growth of cities. With an excess of 250 row houses, of which only 50 are settled, bad debt has caused these new homes to fall into disrepair with concrete chipping off the buildings, stolen piping, radiators and doors and ghostly empty streets.
Herman’s Square, the new business residential building by Arhimetrics +Enota, is located at an important location in the old city centre in Celje. The land intended for construction is a part of a larger degraded non-built up area, which was somewhat forgotten for decades and exempt from the development of the city. Through the years a very heterogeneous structure evolved around this “wound” in the urban tissue, which was untouched for a long time. It is now surrounded by a range of modern construction in an area that has extensive open space intended for a future park along the Savinja River.
Corazon Sur Pueblo is a proposal for a Library Park that will function as the heart of Puebla, Mexico, a city where infrastructure, services, and education are scarce. Rondero Carpena Arquitectos, Luisa Marti and COR & Partners envision an architectural program that will revive vital parts of the neighborhood and create a sustainable social system where the people will experience increased quality of life, education, and an expansion of opportunities.

Silvertree, designed by Studio RHE, is a landmark 24-storey ‘green’ apartment tower located in London’s Royal Docks. It has been granted planning approval and will commence construction in summer 2011. The mixed-use tower will house 161 high-quality 2-3 bedroom apartments, retail and office space and a cafe.

Australian practice INDEX Architecture has been shortlisted in the “Urban Landscaping in Kiev for Euro 2012” competition. The competition, which was recently completed at the CANaction 2011 Architecture Festival in Kyiv, sought submissions tackling some of the latent urban problems facing the city today and proposing solutions that could be achieved in time for the EURO 2012 football tournament, which the Ukraine is co-hosting with Poland. INDEX’s proposal sought to reconnect the city of Kiev with its waterfront area and the Dnieper River in a project called “Eroding the Edge.”
Storefront for Art and Architecture, the New Museum, and New York City’s Department of Transportation (NYCDOT), are pleased to announce that a team of emerging New York City-based designers from the studios Family and PlayLab have been selected as the winners of Storefront’s StreetFest international competition to re-envision temporary outdoor structures. The StreetFest competition asked for designs that envisioned street tents not only as shelters but also as active elements within the collective construction and understanding of the city.
