Ragdale, the nationally acclaimed artists’ residency in Lake Forest, Illinois invites architects, designers and artists to apply for the opportunity to design, build, and exhibit the 2017 Ragdale Ring, a temporary outdoor theatre to house summer concerts, performances, and events. Ragdale seeks proposals for a full-scale project and installation that consider contemporary, fanciful and functional interpretations of the original Ragdale Ring, designed by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw in 1912 as a garden theatre.
The Stone Barn Meditation Camp architecture competition is a partnership with SRED property developers to create a multipurpose recreational space. Participants are tasked with presenting ideas for a venue, which focuses on wellness tourism and offers holistic outlets such as meditation and yoga.
The Jeff Harnar Award for Contemporary Architecture is now accepting submissions for the 2017 award cycle. This is the 10th year of this award that honors the late Jeff Harnar, known for his groundbreaking design in contemporary architecture in Santa Fe, NM. The Jeff Harnar Award is a prestigious award in the architectural profession and offers one of the top prize amounts in the country, awarding the winner a $10,000 cash prize.
Radical Innovation, a platform promoting disruptive, industry-
changing ideas within the hotel space, announces the opening of the annual Radical Innovation Award for 2017. Professionals and students are invited to submit their ideas online January 17th through April 22nd.
Since being founded in 2006, Radical Innovation has awarded over $150,000 to creative thinkers with visionary ideas in hotel design and operations. Past winners have included Driftscape, a drone-hotel concept designed by architecture and design firm HOK; Koi, a bridge hotel concept designed by MM Architects in Paris; and ZOKU, a concept that blends co-work spaces with the hotel. ZOKU opened its first property in Amsterdam in 2016.
Concéntrico is Logroño’s Architecture and Design Festival. It is open to residents of the city and visitors from elsewhere, and it aims to discover and rediscover spaces of interest in the city’s Historic Center. The Festival invites attendees to tour these spaces through installations that create a connection between inner courtyards, tucked-away spaces and small plazas that, in the day-to-day, tend to go unnoticed.
Architecture Sans Frontières International (ASF-Int) Award was founded in the purpose of sharing the most efficient solutions developed by architects globally to the many social, environmental and economic challenges facing the built environment. The goal of the award is to promote those solutions among the design profession and the general public, which will encourage an exchange of ideas and challenge the profession to develop the construction of social facilities and infrastructure.
Architecture is no longer just a product of design and construction but also a vehicle of a social action. Communication and mediation are key to this process. The role of architects has to do more with interdisciplinary teamwork than with authorship.
The ARCASIA Awards for Architecture, which was restructured and re-branded to AAA in 2013, is aimed at acknowledging exemplary work done by architects working in Asia. In so doing, it encourages the sustenance of the Asia spirit, the development and improvement of the Asian built environment and enhancement of the awareness of the role of architecture and architects in the socio-economic and cultural life of Asian countries. With this Award, the intention is also to demonstrate that good architecture is a major component of the positive influence on the human environment, and that physical development in Asia need not be in disharmony with the cultural values, national identity or the natural environment of developing countries in Asia. The city architect of Antwerp, Christian Rapp, organises an international urban design competition on the future development of Linkeroever (the Left Bank). The Left Bank is an exceptional part of Antwerp. It is an urban district, born from a patchwork of plans that were only partially executed. Today, high-rise housing blocks are situated next to villas and zones for recreation. A major asset of Linkeroever is the open and green character. On the other hand it is a residential area with few mixed use. Recently, Linkeroever has been given renewed attention thanks to projects such as Regatta, IGLO-Europark, masterplan Sint-Anneke, etc. However, a general framework ensuring the connection between these and future projects does not exist.

Time is ticking. That’s what it does. Or at least that’s how we represent what we don’t understand. For physics, time is a byproduct of so called space-time, elastic goo created at the very moment that something came from nothing; the moment eternity stopped and the universe began. For geology, time is 4.5 billion years of compression and catastrophe. For biology time is 3.5 billion years of diversification and now the urgency of the sixth extinction. For anthropology time is 150 thousand years since mitochondrial Eve walked out of the rift valley in Ethiopia. For historians, time begins with Herodotus (484 BC) and ends, or rather doesn’t, with Fukuyama’s The End of History. For architecture time is ruination. For landscape architecture time is ephemerality, entropy, and growth. For all of us time is running out. In this issue of LA+ we invite speculations on the question of time from all relevant disciplines.
The City of Tampere, Finland has announced the proposal by Schauman & Nordgren Architects and Mandaworks as the winner of an open international competition for Hiedanranta Bay's new master plan. The design, entitled "Hiedanranta Innovation Bay," responds to the rapid growth of Tampere's central region. Over the next 20 years, the Innovation Bay will see the transformation of the former industrial district into an innovation hub for sustainable economic development, creating 10,000 new jobs, and housing over 25,000 new residents.

The competition asks participants to design a house of the future which demonstrates the use of innovative technology, integrative environmental strategies and capitalizes on the iconic prominence of its site beneath the famed Hollywood sign. The competition serves as a design charette generating ideas about the potential for what the site could become and how it can inspire the future of residential design.
London - literature's labyrinth of 'lost souls' is one of the favorite settings for writers/poets/scientists/thinkers and intelligentsia, who have nurtured the city into the greatest hub of intellectual revolution. One of the greatest living cities of the planet, London has had the biggest global influence on the socio-economic and cultural landscape of the world. London has been the influence and subject of various literary figures like Shakespeare, Keats, Milton, Byron, Dickens, Newton, Arthur Doyle, George Bernard Shaw, PB Shelley, Chaucer, Virginia Woolf, JK Rowling etc. to name a few. It has been the greatest hub for the development of arts, science, and the great English Literature.
As a young architect, there are crucial moments and decisions that begin to define your professional career. What type of architecture do I relate to? Who or what inspires me to create and design? Where do I form my architectural references and context? Should I stay or should I look for a professional experience abroad? At this point, most of us have dreamed of living and working in New York, Chicago, San Francisco... but we often have no clue where to start and immigration bureaucracy seems so obscure, expensive and complicated that we easily get discouraged and give up on our American Dream.
