The Module for Activities and Community Services was created to meet the demand of spaces for commerce, eating, and socializing at the Darcy Ribeiro Campus of the University of Brasília Foundation. The project was standardized to optimize the construction and shorten the completion time. The buildings designed for the Darcy Ribeiro Campus were named Módulo de Atividades e Serviços Comunitários - MASC (Module for Activities and Community Services). In this Campus the units were located in the North (near the Pavilions), Center (near the University Restaurant and the Faculty of Technology), and South (near the Institute of Chemistry and the Faculty of Health Sciences).
The building program includes 6 multipurpose areas with 14.22 m² each; 3 food courts with 48.35 m², 50.42 m² and 78.85 m²; men's and women's public locker rooms with 37.52 m² each; men's and women's locker rooms for employees with 9.68 m² each; a locker room for people with special needs with 4.41 m²; a storeroom for cleaning supplies with 4.70 m²; a storeroom for sports equipment with 16.76 m²; a living area with 484.27 m²; an exclusive electric panel for each multipurpose area and food court; and an exclusive gas distribution system for each food court.
The building was designed entirely at ground level to ensure accessibility. The covered area contains three volumes, alternately arranged, for distinct purposes. The first one is dedicated to multipurpose areas, the second, with the same size as the first one, contains the locker rooms, and a larger module is destined for dining. The living and social areas are found in the remaining space, providing tables and benches. The architectural concept sought to separate the different functions of the building, thus configuring a roofed inner patio as a living space.
The structure is built traditionally, using cast-in-place concrete, and the walls are made of plastered and painted hollow brick masonry. The sun baffles will be prefabricated in aluminum with a natural finish. Maintaining a low budget for the building was the main concern in this regard. Finishing materials shall follow the current standards adopted at the UnB, cutting costs, and minimizing maintenance.
