Text description provided by the architects. Up in the mountain areas of Jinotega in Nicaragua, Sasle School serves as the only education facility for the rural community of Sasle. Located in the buffer zone of the natural reserve of Miraflores the school is also designed to work as community center and shelter in case of natural disasters.
The school is built with different wall materials, including a combination of metal, wood and bricks to achieve thermal balance inside its three classrooms. The external walls have wooded solar protection elements to avoid direct solar exposure.
The school considers natural ventilation and natural light by using translucent sheets in the two entrance vestibules and by a wall of wooden slats in the community hall which also forms a furniture where kids can lay back. When all doors are opened the three classrooms are used as a single space for community meetings.
Volunteers from Bridges to Community Canada in addition to a strong participation of the local community improved the impact of the project and reduced time of construction and costs.
Nowadays, when classes are finished for the day, the School of Sasle is used for different communities meetings organized by the municipality, NGO’s and the community.
