Populous, in collaboration with Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects and BuroHappold Engineering, have submitted their design proposal for the new 12,000-person Bristol Arena to the Bristol City Council for planning approval. Following the consultation with the city and with the public, “plans have been developed further to show how event spaces in front of the arena can be used for performances, outdoor cinema, festivals, and markets.”
Such changes to the proposal include a widened bicycle path and walkway with a new bridge over the railway line to link Three Lamps Junction with the Arena Terrace, increased bicycle parking, reduced Park and Ride services, additional shuttle trains, and more accommodations for large events, like temporary road closures. The new plans additionally include new funding for parking controls in vulnerable residential areas.
“The design for Bristol Arena has evolved and grown in detail over the past few months. The simple, elegant form of the lower plinth and upper ellipse brings life to the idea of ‘ground and sky.’ This creates both a strong civic presence and a dynamic, reflective surface which responds to the surrounding landscape. During daylight the curving form and reflective cladding catch the light, changing with the weather and season; whilst at night, with the façade softly illuminated, the striking form is most evident, becoming a new landmark in Bristol.”
