Atelier YokYok, in partnership with Sammode, created a temporary geometric forest called “TREEDOM” for the 2015 Sziget Festival in Budapest. Constructed in nine days before the festival, and then dismounted in two days afterwards, the installation was composed of 37 wood poles, and over 200 boards, with the highest point extending 10 meters.
A network of poles—“trees”—was arranged randomly across a square grid, giving the “forest” varied densities and transparencies, depending on where the viewer stands. To further this feeling of being in a forest, the trees were fastened together by their branches, resembling the interlocking of a vegetated canopy.
As a whole, the installation was meant “to gather people around a simple symbol,” as a sort of meeting point, but also to be “experienced from within” as an art form.
Benches spanned between some trees, offering space for outdoor lounging: during the day, visitors can sit in partial shade, and a night, can experience a “warm ambiance” from Sammode lights illuminating the canopy.
