KAMJZ Proposes Sustainable Ruichang Flower Market for China

KAMJZ have unveiled their proposal for the UIA’s MOLEWA (Mount Lu Estate of World Architecture) competition, which tasked participants with designing several cultural and commercial complexes near one of the world’s largest flower theme parks in Ruichang, China. Titled Ruichang Flower Market, KAMJZ's design contemplates a series of shopping streets with high-end, as well as more vernacular shopping spaces, in particular a specialty area carrying flowers grown in the neighboring Flower Theme Park, traditional crafts, and souvenirs.

Their design seeks "to connect the core of the Molewa area with the Flower Garden theme and at the same time create a modern sustainable city center which is deeply connected with Chinese culture, making architecture and the city a tourist destination of it's own. As a result a vibrant town centre would be created which provides a neighborhood feeling and showcases a practical, green sustainable approach."

The proposed Flower Market Building implements numerous types and arrangements of vegetation, particularly flowers, including horizontal landscaped podiums, green rooftops, and vertical green walls, all of which are integrated into a spacious central courtyard.

The design of the Market is based around this courtyard, comprised of elevated, landscaped flower gardens and socialization spaces. Layered residential, commercial, and parking areas, from top to bottom, respectively, throughout four unique buildings, surround the courtyards with an open and friendly atmosphere.

Each of the buildings has its own characteristic façade that will celebrate the cultural traditions of China in a modern way and express the flower courtyard within, utilizing local materials and details.

In correspondence with the environmental inclination of the project, porous surfaces throughout plazas and pavement act as a sustainable rainwater harvesting system. Furthermore, building materials are carefully selected from certified sources, and PVC solar panels cover the highest rooftop spaces.

On special days, shopping streets would be converted into viewing terraces, in order to accommodate large-scale flower auctions in the levels below.
