Text description provided by the architects. The house explores the oportunities offered by living on land, within the limits of an "apartment budget".
An architectural concept would be hard to describe; after a series of concepts that were above the available budget, the decision was made to follow a set of principlesrather than an architectural image or outcome.
Land Use
The plot is quite small - about 330sqm - so the way in which it is used is of great importance - each piece of land was given a use and in the end, in the economy of the parcel there is even space for a vegetable garden.
A Simple House Shape
The old tradition of building in the area is strict and austere; nothing is left ot chance. Every element in the construction has multiple uses or responds to multiple needs, architecture has meaning. This appoach is pursued in contemporary form.
A series of iconic images that we automaticaly associate with dweling are incorporated, the house shape, the chimney, the entrance light.
Connection to the Land and Surroundings
The tightly packed interior is organised keeping in mind the link to the outside, there are 2 small terraces, each with a different ambiance and the windows offer different types of views ( open field, hillside, old chudch tower, mountains)
Energy Minded
Part of the challenge was to make a house that not cost more that an apartment to heat.
While the strict budget ment smart instalations were out of the questions, simple low-tech solutions are used: the spaces are packed in a dense volume, the openings are carefully oriented, summer shade is provided by trees, the outside envelope has a high level of insulation.
The Result
The house is 30% above class A in energy efficiency (national standards do not have a higher distinction). The climbing plants that are to slowly generate the fence are taking their time but the vegetable garden has been a delight.
