Text description provided by the architects. The condition of site (located Western part of old City Center, called Jongro) is very small and unusual place, which is 6m wide, 5.5 long. From this limitation with the building code, the house was designed for taking maximum volume with idea vertically accumulated 3 rooms with small skip floor space for library. Utilizing small garden from the entrance, library between 1st and 2nd floor, Terrace, irregular window, skylight and, circular stairs, the space keep open up person’s view.
Especially, Library space is connecting two space not only optical but acoustic/scent. And every window was designed to frame the great landscape in a different position with different size. The mass design was design to assimilate with natural surroundings, which are rocky mountain. Lastly, Mongdang is multiple meanings for “shortness” as well as “Dreaming House” in Korea. It could be something against the trend that people regard the house as only the money in Korea.
