The Las Margaritas Ejidal Center, located in the highlands of the San Luis Potosí desert, was a collaborative project between Dellekamp Architects, TOA, and the local community. Through workshops, we set out to design with, and not just for the community.
The inhabitants asked for: 1. A room in which to hold communal meetings and local parties; 2. A shop in which to sell the natural products of Asociación Flor del Desierto; 3. An Internet center and library; 4. Workshop rooms; and 5. A garden.
We used local and traditional building techniques to reduce environmental impact, and we trained the population so they could improve and maintain their own homes. The buildings are positioned in a perimeter to protect the central area from strong winds and harsh desert conditions.
