Text description provided by the architects. The commission from a young couple was to design a home and studio for wood carvings and paintings. Located in an ancient beech forest on the Pirihueico lakeshore.
The proposal was to make a bright and welcoming retreat that inhabits the harsh nature of the place, enjoying it from a core that keep a distance from it, but integrates and frames it. Formally, it should assimilate the image of the buildings in the south with their large roofs, their volumes of simple geometries faded by the work of time on their woods. This form is not a fad, because it is based on the extreme climate of snowy winters and rainy summers on this lake with a difficult access, that also helped preserve the original, fantastic nature of the place.
The project thus arises as a hermetic container which houses a large studio space with two major windows to the east, the first is a crack that accompanies the access ramp to the studio, where water from the main roof runs on rainy days, blurring the surrounding landscape. In the studio, this window cuts the trunks of the trees, and among them the lake is framed. The other window is a skylight that opens to the east to illuminate the space from early in the morning.
The other living spaces are a small bedroom and a bathroom that due to their layout, enjoy the scenery only through the heart of the project, the studio. Privacy, if necessary, is achieved by a sliding door.
The only physical connection to the outside is through a wall that folds becoming a terrace, the reason for this is that nature can be enjoyed directly during very few days, so it was not necessary to make a specific space for this purpose, it is created by opening the studio on sunny days only.
