Text description provided by the architects. The building site of [The Sarang Church] is facing the 40m road on north. Since it is located at northern corner of the block, it is the first object that the car drivers will recognize right after they get out of the tunnel. Moreover, the site has an atypical triangular shape so that we decided to follow the atypical mass which is corresponding to shape of the site rather than adjusting the efficient rectangular plans. Then, we facilitate the required programs of church into the atypical mass form.
First image that we created is the “fortress”. (Lord is my strong fortress)
Second image is the “ark” (Noah’s ark, which saves the world)
Third image is the “dove”, (symbols of Holy Spirit and Peace).
We tried to create the mixed images of the all of the above to the building.
First priority for the church program is designing the main chapel. We created the semi-circular plan with 2,000 seats as a main chapel and we overlapped the semi-circular mass with the existing atypical mass. Therefore the main chapel mass is projected out from the center of the main mass. We even differentiated the two masses by using different materials – Zinc & Stone for exterior finish. Additionally, we create the main exterior stair in order to connect from the ground plaza to the main chapel.
Roof garden and cafeteria is located at the 6th floor which is above main chapel mass. Office & meeting room areas are located at 7th and 8th floors with its own deck and separate stairs to the roof garden. Although the whole entire building is 48m high, the upper part of the building from the roof garden seems only 3 floors high from the ground. Wood finish in exterior and landscapes in roof garden creates the ambience of nature to the people.
