Text description provided by the architects. The lot is located in the historical center of Vitoria-Gasteiz, next to Santa Maria Cathedral, at the corner of the Canton and Txikita Street. The project is drawn up at the request of the homeowners.
The original building, from the nineteenth century and not catalogued, is demolished due to its state of ruin. The new building ordinance exhaustively defines the parameters of the new volume. Occupancy must be reduced to free the continuity of the inner circulation, separating the building from the bowling alley located at the top of the Cantón de Santa María.
The design of the building reflects the discretion and the respect due the environment, mainly in regards to Santa Maria Cathedral. This Cantón was the entry for the Camino de Santiago to the Cathedral, and we have tried to introduce an architecture without ornament, without added volumes on a facade with simple and uniform openings, always avoiding the imitation of the past and with a required intent of contemporaneity.
The building is conceived as a trapezoidal prism with a pitched roof, flat facades and no overhangs. We defined a single vertical opening framed with weathering steel and glass railing that is repeated aligned, composing a simple and neutral facade with two materials, an exterior, continuous insulated siding and weathering steel for the baseboards, entrance and openings.
Inside are four small dwellings, each with two orientations; three single-bedroom dwellings and a two-bedroom duplex.
