Text description provided by the architects. Tierra de Barros’s Hospital, in Almendralejo is a horizontal hospital conceived similar to the vernacular architecture of the region. An external wall encloses the buildings and open spaces (patios and gardens), above which emerges the volume of the main entrance.
Design incorporates an orthogonal grid with opposite access and circulation corridors for staff and visitors, with the entrance to Emergency on one side. The circulation grid gives access to the different buildings or “functional containers” where required, resulting in a very open scheme. Open patios between these blocks permit natural lighting and ventilation to every work space within departments. The dimension of openings in façades responds to climatic and internal conditions. The hospital complex is surrounded by a wall finished in various textures.
