Text description provided by the architects. South Place is a new eight-storey boutique hotel designed by Allies and Morrison for owner and developer Frogmore. Situated in the heart of the City, interior design is by Conran + Partners and D&D London is the hotel’s operator.
Located near Moorgate and Liverpool Street stations, South Place has 80 bedrooms, two restaurants - one with a rooftop terrace, three bars, conference and private dining rooms. Since opening last month the hotel has already established itself as a destination in the City.
Located on a narrow City block, the brief for the scheme was to maximise the potential of the site with a building which would fit into the streetscape and respond to its immediate context. Its eaves align with the neighbouring blocks and the cladding to the facades folds back to form a mansard roof with dormer windows cut into it.
The façade is composed of a layered surface, the innermost composed of glass and a bronze coloured metal and the outer is an aluminium rainscreen panel which articulates the plan arrangement of the hotel rooms within the overall structure.
Sustainability was an important consideration from the outset of the design and the scheme is designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of Excellent and provide CO2 savings of 40% below Part L 2006 requirements.
