Text description provided by the architects. Fifth Studio is a low budget building to house a workshop for different artists and different disciplines in Cuernavaca City. It is made up of five spaces whose purpose is to be integrated to the context and the landscape, so that each one can enjoy the climate and the views of the region.
The coffee shop, of 90 sqm; the main gallery of 140 sqm, seven meters of height so that the artists work altogether and where exhibitions and concerts will carry out; an area of individual ateliers of 90 sqm; an intermediate esplanade of 150m2, to carry out open exhibitions and to be the league between the coffee shop and the ateliers; and a terrace taking advantage of the cover of the gallery like a green ceiling to work outdoor disciplines.
We worked with the levels of the land so that each one of the spaces had a direct view to the north; to the Mountain range of the Ajusco and the Tepozteco. We tried to use only recycled materials from industrial waste and the proper excavation rocks.
The main gallery connects to all the ateliers in a second level, allowing the artist to share their work in a direct way. Both the ateliers and the gallery have windows open to the light from the north, while some of the views are control to the east, where we can see the Popocateptl volcano. The height of every space has its own propose, being the respect of the environment the most important. The materials we have chosen, are in extreme connection with the site, making it almost an extension of it.
The Coffee counts on a system of recycled steel doors that from pulleys and rails are opened and run to leave the cover totally cleared. It lacks glass so that the fresh air circulates freely of north to the south and the aligned main Vista towards east volcanos is to about two meters on the level of the street. Towards the north, where they enjoy the Mountain range the Tepozteco and the Ajusco, we placed the factories so that the Vista from the coffee was not interrupted. A central structure was designed that loads for both sides armors that form the space of the factories and the cover of the gallery. The different spaces are putting in their levels, as if they were cultivated field terraces that allow all to be related in a same space. The facade of the factories this covered with light recycled fiber glass panels that in sequence give to the building an appearance him to the Earth color in the region and that obtain that it is not a heavy structure on the surroundings.
