Text description provided by the architects. We wanted to explore the transformative potential of a child’s fantastic imagination. Therefore we extended the fairytale of the local mascot “Murgel” by the story of the four spirits living in the legendary Black Forest. Together with the children of Baiersbronn we wanted to redesign the tourists’ kindergarten “Murgel’s Playhouse”.
We organized two workshops. Together we wanted to invent new characters based on the classical elements such as water, earth, fire and air. Here the children showed us their imaginary fantasy world of all the creatures living in the Black Forest. With paintings, drawings and models we explored each character the children invented and had a close look at their natural habits and surroundings:
In the Water World lives the Swimming Potato – and there is a hotel for trouts. Each morning when all the fish swim out of the hotel, the whole lake is enlightened by the shiny skin of the trouts. Now they serve as a wardrobe for the children.
Between the roots of a big tree lives the root gnome. He is digging in the earth to find dreams that he can give to the children. Here the children can cook with the most exquisite chefs of Baiersbronn.
Underneath the Fire Mountain the Fire King is playing and cuddling with bits and pieces of lava. Here the children can run and climb on the fire mountain and it’s platforms or rest on the top of the mountain and observe other children.
In the treetop the children can paint and draw pictures with the Glittering Fairy. The ceiling will soon be covered with painted and tinkered leaves by each child that has been to Murgel’s Playhouse.
