Organized by Graz University of Technology, the ‘Advanced Building Skins’ Conference will take place June 14-15 where creative, innovative professionals and researchers at the forefront of skin design will discuss tasks and issues in research, design and manufacturing of high-performance façades and building envelopes. Participants will gain new perspectives on, and an enhanced insight into, developments and research in design and engineering for tomorrow’s advanced building skins. uilding skins have rarely been as fascinating and challenging as they are today. They are the most interesting field in contemporary architecture. Façades and building envelopes are determining the visual identity, character and expression of architecture. At an international symposium from 26/05/2011 till 28/05/2011 in Graz, attention turns to the question of how to shape an active role for architecture in the development of “Dense Cities“. The range of questions covers all levels of scale ranging from urban landscape and agglomeration through districts to blocks and individual buildings, covering everything from the development of new building typologies on through actual interventions in the urban setting to analyses of transformations of urban density.

Sandra Janser and Elisabeth Koller won first prize in the design competition: Design Month Graz 2010 project, “Ready. Steady. Go.” that called for a catalyst for the resettlement of the Jakomini district, in Graz, Austria, through the promotion of activities and attractiveness of the neighborhood through its revitalization. Their proposal was the installation of a visual frame, one that would serve as a marker for significant design areas with a visible and positive identity.

The Graz Architecture Diploma Award choose the best diploma projects from Graz University of Technology. The jury, Robert Hösl (Herzog & de Meuron), Kathrin Aste (Aste Architecture), Florian Fischer (Fischer Architekten) and journalist/curator/designer Lilli Hollein spent nearly nine hours of intense discussion to select the four winning entries out of the 31 nominees.
