AIAS Research Symposium

The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) returns fall event programming to the calendar beginning in 2016. In conjunction with the organization’s 60th anniversary, the AIAS will be presenting four AIAS Fall Research Symposium for students in each AIAS Quad. The events are an effort to provide student members with training opportunities centered on designing, funding, performing, and presenting effective research projects. As research represents an important facet of architecture in both the academy and practice, we want to ensure our members obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the profession.

"Unofficial" Design for Obama Presidential Library Provides "Second Home" To Visitors

Just as the competition to design the official Obama Presidential Library in Chicago was heating up, Arcbazar orchestrated a simultaneous, open-call for ideas competition asking “What sort of Presidential Library would the people design?." Raynaldo Theodore Design Studio (RTDS) led by Raynaldo Theodore, Ryan Ridge, and Kalvin Widjaja responded with a proposal that focuses on Obama's peaceful and inclusive spirit to create a place of welcome and community. Dubbed The V-House, their design is comprised of a series of indoor/outdoor sequences which reference Obama's life and significant points in its Chicago context.

AD Classics: Bullocks Wilshire / John and Donald Parkinson

With its iconic copper-clad tower looming over Wilshire Boulevard, the Bullock’s Wilshire has been a celebrated element of the Los Angeles cityscape since its opening in 1929. Known for its lavish Art Deco aesthetic, the department store made its mark as a prime shopping destination in a city filled with celebrities. But the Bullock’s Wilshire was more than a glamorous retail space; with a design centered around the automobile, it was to set a new standard for how businesses adapted to a rapidly changing urban environment.

2016 International PUARL Conference

With the successful completion of the first three International PUARL Conferences at the University of Oregon in Portland in 2009, 2011, and 2013 (in cooperation with ARUS), and the latest conference carried out in cooperation with PURPLSOC, the "World Conference on Pattern Languages" at the Danube University of Krems in Austria in the summer of 2015, the PUARL Conference Series has reached a new level of interdisciplinary involvement and a new international format and organization. The annual conferences will continue to alternate between Europe and the US covering the large and growing body of work in the emerging discipline of Regenerative Processes in our Urban Environments. We at the Portland Urban Architecture Research Laboratory are therefore pleased to announce the next conference entitled "The Regenerative City."
