Perched on a coastal cliff in Anglesea, Australia, the Burnt Earth Beach House is a thoughtfully designed residence by architect John Wardle that blends natural materials with functionality. Designed for his own family, the home draws inspiration from the rugged landscape of Wardle’s childhood, embracing sunlight, coastal views, and a connection to its surroundings.

Extensive glazing maximizes light and views but required innovative solutions for managing sunlight and heat. Wardle collaborated with experts to implement external shading systems from Shade Factor, tailored to the home’s needs. Drop arm and vertical awnings, paired with a Climatronic control system, provide precise light control while protecting interiors and maintaining uninterrupted views. These systems ensure the home remains comfortable and energy-efficient in its coastal environment, marrying aesthetics with practicality.

The exterior features terracotta bricks, carefully selected to reflect the natural colors and textures of the cliffs. Inside, terracotta tiles sourced from Florence extend this theme, creating continuity between interior and exterior. The layout includes large, open spaces under a single expansive roof, with areas oriented to capture sunlight and frame specific coastal views. Wardle’s personal touches, from curated artwork to custom-designed furniture, further enrich the home’s character.
