Healey Ryan Architects has transformed a traditional South Melbourne terrace into a bright, functional family home. This project blends heritage character with modern design, prioritizing natural light, cohesive spaces, and innovative shading solutions to ensure comfort and aesthetics.
Shade Factor's Warema Terrea K50 folding arm awning, recessed seamlessly into the brickwork, offers discreet and effective shading for the rear glazing. Its design maintains architectural integrity while providing sun protection when extended. Custom perforated steel shutters for the upstairs rear window were fitted with Shade Factor’s hidden actuators, allowing for precise operability and wind resistance without compromising the minimalist aesthetic. These advanced solutions integrate into the overall design, balancing functionality with visual appeal.
The fragmented kitchen, living, and dining areas were unified, with rear living spaces leveled for better light penetration. A two-story light shaft above the kitchen further enhances daylight flow, connecting spaces visually and spatially.
The redesign centers on a multifunctional dining table and kitchen island, enhancing openness and efficiency. Upstairs, larger bedrooms and a reimagined bathroom continue focusing on thoughtful functionality. The rear façade features handmade red bricks, matching mortar, a red steel eave, and custom perforated steel shutters, combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary elements in a cohesive design.
