Global Treasures: The Al Thani Collection

The Al Thani Collection is one of the world’s most renowned private art collections, offering an exceptional range of artworks from prehistoric times to the present day. It spans a variety of cultures and civilizations, celebrating the creativity and universal power of art throughout history. Over the years, the collection has been featured in a series of international exhibitions organized by The Al Thani Collection Foundation, a non-profit focused on promoting art and culture. Exhibitions have been hosted by major institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Tokyo National Museum.

Thanks to a partnership with the Centre des monuments nationaux, the Collection now has a permanent home at the Hôtel de la Marine in Paris for the next 20 years. Key pieces from the collection will be on display, along with a rotating schedule of temporary exhibitions.

The Hôtel de la Marine, an 18th-century palace, was originally created under Louis XV as a royal furniture storehouse and later served as the French Navy’s headquarters for over 200 years. The spaces now used as galleries once held valuable tapestries during the Garde-Meuble era.

The new gallery design, by Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects, merges contemporary architecture with the building’s rich history, creating a space that honors both the artworks and the Hôtel de la Marine’s past.

The inaugural exhibition features a wide range of works from over 5,000 years of history, including an Egyptian royal head carved from red jasper (15th–13th century B.C.), a Chinese gilt bronze bear sculpture from the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–25 A.D.), a Mayan mask pendant (200–600 A.D.), and the jade cup of Mughal emperor Jahangir (16th–17th century A.D.).

Goppion has created 25 showcases for The Al Thani Collection. Some have been designed for specific objects and locations in the exhibition space, and consequently required different shapes and opening mechanisms. Of particular engineering complexity is a large curved display case over 20 meters long, with motorized pull and slide opening of the rear panels.
