Fabral is a leading company in the metal cladding industry for residential, light commercial, and agricultural applications. The Freelon Group Architects used Fabral's Hefti-Rib Exposed Fastener Panels for the refurbishment of the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Harvey Bernard Gantt was the first African-American student admitted to Clemson University and Charlotte’s first African-American mayor. In celebration of his contributions to the community, the Afro-American Cultural Center was renamed after Mr. Gantt. The Freelon Group, known for projects that highlight African-American history, was selected for the renovation. The design sought to convey two culturally significant symbols, Jacob’s Ladder and quilts. Fabral's versatile, durable Hefti-Rib exposed fastener panels helped the Freelon Group communicate their vision.
Fabral perforated copper panels were used to frame the building’s exterior staircases and central atrium, providing a modern interpretation of Jacob’s Ladder. This design feature memorializes the ideals of enlightenment and advancement through cultural awareness. The copper panels are “woven” together by diagonal steel channels, echoing African-American quilting patterns from the Underground Railroad era. Together, these architectural references help underscore the Center’s mission to engage in conversations that inspire the community.
