Characteristics
Structural, glare-free, balanced daylighting, thermal performance, low maintenance, durable, fast installation, design versatility
Kalwall provides museum-quality daylighting™ available with superior thermal performance options to reduce buildings' carbon footprint. Skyroof® by Kalwall was used at the Scarborough Atrium in Ontario, United States.
Built in the 1990s, the Scarborough Atrium faced significant issues with its large glass skylight. The remote-controlled blinds, designed to reduce solar heat and enhance comfort, failed within a few years and couldn't be repaired. Over time, many of the Insulated Glazing Units (IGUs) also deteriorated, causing additional problems.
To resolve these issues, NORR architects chose a durable daylighting system from Structures Unlimited Inc. and Kalwall. The new 300-foot-long, 20,000-square-foot Skyroof® provides soft, glare-free light without the need for blinds or IGU replacements, saving the client millions.
The new Kalwall panels not only reduce energy costs through diffuse daylighting but also lower HVAC demands, boosting the building's energy efficiency. Sustainability was further enhanced by working with Structures Unlimited and Vestacon to reuse the existing structural steel, cutting 40 tons of CO₂ emissions and streamlining installation. The Scarborough Atrium renovation showcases sustainability at every phase, significantly improving energy efficiency and environmental impact. The redesigned space reflects the original vision of a comfortable, welcoming environment while transforming an outdated structure into a modern, eco-friendly solution.
