Large Umbrellas at Milan International Furniture Fair | MDT-tex

MDT designs, manufactures and supplies innovative, high-quality sun protection systems, membrane constructions, and textile outdoor architecture to customers worldwide. Customized XXL Type E Tulip Umbrellas from MDT were used at the Milan International Furniture Fair in Italy.

The furniture fair was held in the Palazzo Isimbardi courtyard. As an open, outdoor space it required protection from the elements that didn't clash with the surrounding arches and Renaissance architecture. To meet these requirements, four customized XXL Tulip Umbrellas (8 x 8 m) were installed at a height of 8 m.

Milan's city center provided a logistical challenge. Narrow entrances, narrow streets, and strict conservation laws made the construction of the umbrellas challenging. The tailor-made umbrellas were constructed with precision, down to the very centimeter, to compliment the inner courtyard and the arch-shaped Renaissance arcades—resulting in architectural harmony between the old and the new. By installing Tulip Umbrellas the city was able to maximize usage and enjoyment of the courtyard while protecting valuable exhibits from the elements.
