More about this product

Pilkington UK, a leader in advanced glass technology, played a pivotal role in the development of the Solina Observation Tower and Gondola Station. This project, initiated by PKL Group (Polish Cableways) and PFR Group (The Polish Development Fund), represents a significant investment in enhancing Solina's appeal as a major tourist destination. Pilkington Optilam™, Pilkington Suncool™, and Pilkington AviSafe™ were utilized to address the specific needs of this prominent site in the Bieszczady Mountains.

The Project
The Solina Observation Tower and Gondola Station are located in the scenic Bieszczady Mountains, known for their breathtaking natural beauty and the largest artificial lake in Poland. This picturesque area is not only a popular tourist spot but also a crucial habitat for over 130 bird species, including eagles and hawks, which migrate through this region. The project aimed to enhance Solina's tourism infrastructure while ensuring minimal environmental impact. The architectural design incorporated extensive glass facades to offer panoramic views while integrating advanced glass solutions to address both aesthetic and ecological concerns.

Products in Use
For this project, Pilkington AviSafe™ was specifically chosen to safeguard the local bird population. Its unique UV-enhanced coating disrupts reflections and makes the glass more visible to birds, reducing the risk of collisions. In addition, Pilkington Suncool™ 70/35 was employed to manage solar heat gain and glare, ensuring energy efficiency and comfort within the glass structures. Pilkington Optilam™ was utilized for its acoustic and safety properties, contributing to the overall functionality of the gondola station and observation tower. The combination of these products addresses the project's need for thermal insulation, solar control, safety, and environmental responsibility, while maintaining a visually appealing design.

Jason Eggerton, ‘National Business Development Manager at Pilkington UK, highlighted the importance of integrating wildlife protection with modern architectural needs. “Pilkington AviSafe™ helps mitigate the risks associated with bird collisions by making the glass more visible to avian species while ensuring the building's aesthetic remains intact,” he noted. This project exemplifies Pilkington’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, contributing to Solina’s tourism while respecting its natural surroundings.
