The modernization of Jesuheim Nursing Home in Vorarlberg, Austria, integrates HEWI's barrier-free solutions to enhance independence and safety for residents. The nursing home is located above Lochau, offering stunning views of Lake Constance and the mountains. The renovation included spatial optimization and high-quality new buildings, predominantly in modular timber construction. HK Hermann Kaufmann + Partner ZT architects collaborated with HK Architekten to incorporate HEWI's accessible sanitary solutions into the innovative design concept.

The architects embraced a combination of new construction and conversion, with the demolition of the south-facing residential wing, "Haus Pfänder," and the construction of a temporary modular timber extension to ensure uninterrupted operations. The modular approach, economically and ecologically viable due to its wooden composition, allowed for flexible connection and rapid construction, minimizing disruption to residents. The new "Haus Pfänder" features minimalist architecture characterized by clean lines, expansive windows, and a modern wooden façade, creating a contemporary contrast to the historic main building.

Enhanced Accessibility and Safety

The central wing was demolished and rebuilt to include administration, dining facilities, and an event center. Floor-to-ceiling windows and modern design elements infuse the building ensemble with a contemporary aesthetic. Inside "Haus Pfänder," wooden interiors exude warmth, and HEWI's barrier-free sanitary solutions promote autonomy, privacy, and safety. The L-shaped support rails and shower rails from System 900 offer optimal grip and secure hold, complemented by hinged support rails essential for toilet safety. HEWI's Safe Touch shower thermostats protect against scalding, ensuring a safe bathing experience. Washbasins in alpine white, with variable lengths, and single-lever mixers provide intuitive operation and additional support for residents.

Project manager Stefan Hiebeler of HK Architekten commended HEWI solutions for their Universal Design, catering to diverse needs while maintaining high standards in aesthetics and functionality. The system's versatility allows seamless integration, ensuring a cohesive and inclusive environment for all residents. By prioritizing accessibility and safety, HEWI's solutions contribute to Jesuheim Nursing Home's mission of promoting well-being and autonomy in every aspect of daily life.
