Custom Glass Mosaics manufactured by ONIX were chosen to cover the vaulted ceilings of the Paris metro, creating an optical illusion of movement with thousands of meticulously arranged tesserae. At the RER Charles de Gaulle-Étoile station, passengers are treated to a unique experience as they go through tunnels with these mosaic designs.
The collaboration between the prestigious Parisian design studio Plastac and the transportation operator RATP aimed to transform the station's underground passages into vibrant spaces reminiscent of the city's skies. Each vaulted ceiling showcases a spectrum of colors, from the soft hues of dawn to the vivid tones of dusk, achieved through a careful selection of blue, pink, violet, orange, and yellow tesserae crafted by ONIX.
ONIX's customized mosaic tiles, specifically crafted in an 18×43 mm format with a 6 mm thickness, facilitated seamless transitions between colors. This meticulous attention to detail, coupled with a close collaboration between designers, architects, and transportation experts, ensured the project's success. Studio Plastac's multidisciplinary approach to graphic design, blending printed images with dynamic visuals, played a crucial role in bringing the project to fruition. By infusing art into the metro's infrastructure, the installation serves as a testament to the intersection of creativity and functionality in urban spaces.
