NATURCLAD-W Cladding from PARKLEX PRODEMA was used to create a curved wooden soffit in the Moody Center Arena at the Univeristy of Texas. Created by Gensler, the design for the center establishes the arena as a central hub of campus life. The project integrates sports facilities while activating the surrounding environment. The wooden canopy was a key element in creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for the venue. The modular structure can be adjusted to fit the specific needs of different events while creating a continuous flow between the interior and exterior spaces.
Canopy Design
The underside of the canopy features a custom curved wooden soofit from PARKLEX PRODEMA. The soffit was installed in situ using Okume wood. The panels offered high flexibility allowing them to fit the specific radii of the curvature.
The curve serves both aesthetic and functional purposes by creating a transition from the overhanging roof to the interior public space and reducing direct sunlight while allowing natural light to reflect within the space. The funnel-like geometry also invites the guests in from the plaza to their seats.
The vernacular architecture of Texas is known for the use of natural materials such as wood and stone. The specific wood paneling was selected to refer to this. The wooden material also helps create a contrast of warmth compared to the harsher industrial materials. PARKLEX PRODEMA panels offer a highly durable and weather-resistant solution for both interior and exterior applications which ensures a cohesive visual.
