This apartment in Innsbruck has the light quality enhanced by locating the Velux Group roof windows in the corners of the rooms bringing in daylight to classically shaded areas. He und Du architecture office is owned by Christian Hammerl and Elias Walch. They named Elias Walch's attic extension "gut drauf", which translates to "in a good mood”, and is also a play on a German phrase meaning something being placed on the top.
About the Project
The entrance to the apartment is located on the last regular floor of the building; leading to a bright staircase, which continues up to the roof. An open space is divided between daytime and night-time use. In "Gut Drauf" everything belongs to the continuous well-lit space, even the bathroom, instead of being closed off as a dark box, is as well-lit as the rest of the spaces.
Night-time Zone Inside each bedroom is a large Velux roof window, helping to brighten up the space. Wherever possible, the opening is positioned in the corner, upgrading the quality of daylight thanks to the reflection on the white wall surfaces. Otherwise, a location was chosen to visually enlarge the space below it or as in the couple's room, to give views of the sky from the bed. | Day-time Zone The daytime spaces are structured along the lines of three pipes that come from below and a fireplace. A large, wooden table connected to the stove represents the heart of the kitchen and is located looking towards the loggia, under a long dorm window. The stove itself is height-adjustable, a feature that helps it to match the table offering the option to host large dinners with company. |

Positioning the Roof Windows
GGL INTEGRA® Electric roof windows are placed along the walls to help reflect even more daylight, especially in the zones where the room height had to be increased. It was also very important for the architects to position the openings where they wanted to create views towards the stars and clouds, and in the areas that need more daylight.
Windows positioned lower down are manual operation and the higher Velux roof windows, placed close to the ridge are automated, which means it is possible for inhabitants to open them using their phone, for example - from the office, and come back to a well-ventilated apartment.
