Located in the heart of a historic city, the National and University Library of Strasbourg is a prestigious building that has maintained its importance over time. The building underwent a renovation process in 2014 to adapt it to current technical, functional, and security requirements and has been completely refurbished by designer Agence Nicolas Michelin & Associés (ANMA). The result is a building with improved compositional clarity, environmental considerations, and impressive interior spaces. To achieve this, pieces from UniFor's furniture collection were used throughout the workspaces.
Cleared of all superfluous elements, the large full-height space under the dome plays a major role in the functional reorganization of the architectural complex. With the inclusion of a new vertical connection, emphasized by a large spiral staircase, this volume gives access to the surrounding reading areas arranged on various levels.
Interior Spaces - UniFor Furnishings
The clarity of the architectural layout is reflected in the furnishings, which are designed with formal lightness, simplicity, and unity. Here, UniFor's standard Naòs System workstation is reinterpreted and customized for this specific project. ANMA defined the dimensions and characteristics of a basic module with two equipped reading stations, to be reproduced as needed and guarantee high levels of functionality and comfort for users. The library has a total of 700 places for reading and consultation. The workstation has a table-top with a width of 100 cm and a depth of 140 cm, which can accommodate up to two people.
UniFor's Naòs System tables are located in the open space consultation areas, with a polished aluminum structure and customized black Forbo linoleum top, equipped with adjustable LED lamps made of black aluminum tubing. The tables are organized in configurations of four to fourteen facing seats and single workstations in line with computer equipment.
In the study and reading areas protected by glass partitions, two-seater Flipper tables are used with legs painted in black aluminum and a customized top in laminate. The Flipper tables are placed side by side as required. The essential design of the furnishings and the careful choice of materials and color combinations, perfectly integrated into the monumental context of the library, promote an effective and comfortable work environment.
UniFor Naos System Design
UniFor's Naòs System features a primary monolithic table made of anodized aluminum available in various sizes, shapes, and colors. The horizontal frame is supported by four legs at each corner, with additional intermediate supports at the center. With rectangular, square, or L-shape configurations, Naòs System can be personalized to distinct office spaces.
The central table is characterized by an LED light fixture positioned along the center of the table. Made with painted aluminum profiles, the light fixture is supported by slender uprights that also provide cable housing. Network connections are provided through channels between the cable tray, below the table and the uprights, and at the center of the table.
