Characteristics
Design collaboration, complex form, supply and install contract
Located in Sydney, Australia, the Hunter House Cafe features a distinctive parametric ceiling design. Designed by architects Fender Katsilidis Architects and brought to life by Sculptform's custom solutions in conjunction with Porta Moldings. This ceiling utilizes hanging timber dowels of Vic Ash to create a warm and dynamic ceiling feature.
The design of the unique ceiling utilized parametric modeling techniques to conceive of the complex form. Sculptform collaborated with the designers to systemize this organic form and to rationalize the geometry for fabrication.
The complex form belies the rational grid and repeated fixing system (lag screw connections) that allowed for efficient and precise installation. To bring this project to life, the form was ordered into a grid, with each timber dowel cut to size and labeled with the help of Porta Mouldings and Lacey Joinery in the Sculptform factory to maximize the efficiency of installation on-site. Sculptform were key collaborators in the realization of this project and worked with a supply and install contract and coordinated large parts of the manufacturing process.
