Kalwall®’s museum-quality daylightingTM solutions are known for their performance, economy, and aesthetic appearance. In the case of the Odeon Theatre in Bournemouth, UK, the appearance of the panels was put to good use with a curtainwall of Kalwall® translucent sandwich panels becoming a key element of the design.
The Odeon Theatre’s façade is framed in a lantern-like glow from the curtainwall. Over 3,000 square feet (1,000 sq. m) of Kalwall® panels were used in the bold transformation of the site of a former bus station. The curtainwall is used to flank the theatre’s main signage, giving a symbolic feel of two large screens that hint at the cinematic offerings inside.
The translucent cladding encapsulates all nine elevations of the theater and encloses the external fire escapes. At night, a warm, inviting, and ethereal glow serves as a beacon for visitors and mitigates any light pollution issues for the surrounding residential and commercial buildings.
Similar to how important correct angles and lighting are for cinematic quality, proper daylighting is critical for the comfort inside a building. Kalwall® offers comfort by eliminating the stark contrasts of light and shade and creates complete line-of-sight protection, maintaining privacy. There is no need for blinds, curtains, or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is flooded with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall® is highly insulating, reduced energy costs.
