What Architectural Opportunities Will the Trans-West African Coastal Highway Provide?

Traveling on land through vast regional areas of African countries has been an inefficient ordeal, particularly in West Africa. Google Maps optimistically estimates it would take 53 hours to drive nonstop from Lagos, Nigeria's largest city, to Dakar, Senegal's capital. However, this estimate doesn't account for the poor road infrastructure, complex border crossings, and socio-economic challenges that realistically extend the journey to about a week.

This is why the ongoing Trans-West African Coastal Highway project offers a great opportunity to connect and unlock the region's potential. This project, also known as TAH 7, is a transnational highway initiative linking 12 West African coastal nations, from Mauritania in the northwest to Nigeria in the east. Its gradual construction opens new avenues for freight movement, rail infrastructure, and, more importantly, innovative forms of architecture around borders, addressing their unique socio-cultural functions.

Exploring the Legacy of Modernism in Landscape Architecture

Modernist landscape architecture marked a radical shift from traditional garden designs, emphasizing simplicity, functionality, and a stronger connection between people and their environments. From the 1930s through the 1960s, this movement saw the emergence of visionary landscape architects who integrated form and function in ways that redefined outdoor spaces. Their designs responded to the rapidly evolving urban landscapes of the time, prioritizing usability and creating environments that could accommodate modern life. The enduring influence of these principles continues to shape contemporary practices, while also presenting unique challenges in preservation as these landscapes age.

Reimagining Low-Income Housing: The Lillian Murphy Housing Complex

 | Sponsored Content

Mission Bay, San Francisco, once an industrial landscape of warehouses and railroad land, has transformed into the city’s fastest-growing commercial and urban development area. This rapid change, typical of such developments, has led to gentrification, driving up housing prices and making the area unaffordable for many. To address the affordable housing crisis, the Lillian Murphy Housing Complex was built—not just as a place to live, but as a project that redefines the standards for low-income housing. This success was achieved through the collaboration of Paulett Taggart Architects, Studio VARA, and BŌK Modern, demonstrating that functional, intuitive, and high-quality design that strengthens a community is accessible to everyone.

Harvard GSD Inaugurates Polinature, a Plug-In Public Space to Transform Urban Climates

Architects Belinda Tato and Jose Luis Vallejo of Ecosistema Urbano have designed a plug-in public space designed to address the effects of climate change in ill-equipped urban environments. Titled Polinature, the installation has been funded by the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard, and is now installed in the backyard of the Harvard Center for Green Buildings and Cities. The pavilion, featuring native plans set into a scaffolding, with an inflatable bioclimatic canopy, aims to demonstrate how small-scale interventions can create compound positive effects for the local micro-climate and biodiversity.

Curves of Comfort: Ergonomic Infrared Sauna Lounges Redefining Wellness Design

 | Sponsored Content

Saunas, originating over 2,000 years ago in Northern Europe, were initially developed as a method for body purification. In Finland, these spaces were revered for their cleanliness and often served as locations for childbirth. Rooted in Nordic traditions, saunas have traveled globally, carrying with them distinctive design elements such as abundant wood, clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and a stark aesthetic. Traditionally, they offered a serene environment with seating limited to simple straight benches, allowing users to either sit or lie down. This traditional model gained widespread acceptance, with its health benefits championed by medical professionals and its value recognized across various cultures.

Barcelona Completes First Phase of a Multiyear Renovation of La Rambla

La Rambla, a 1.2-kilometer-long promenade in Barcelona, was established in 1766 along the old city walls. Embraced by locals, it became the only spacious area for strolling in a city of narrow streets and grew into a central meeting place for all social classes. Over time, leisure and cultural sites, like the Gran Teatre del Liceu and Boqueria Market, emerged, making it a vibrant, cultural hub. In 2017, Barcelona's local government launched a competition for the revitalization of this beloved urban space. Km_ZERO, a 15-member interdisciplinary team that also relied on the input of community groups was declared the winner. Now the first phase of the urbanization process has been almost completed, led by Lola Domènech and Olga Tarrasó. A hundred trees still remain to be planted in this phase, postponed due to drought conditions. The entire project is expected to be finished in 2027.

Dakar Architecture City Guide: 10 Modern and Contemporary Works that Reflect the City's Evolving Identity

A city that defies expectations, this is what many visitors often express about the Senegalese capital, Dakar. As Africa's most western port city, which gained independence from the French in 1960, Dakar is a regional hub for diversity and culture. While it's often described as an unexpectedly sleek and "modern" city, with its characteristic and sometimes colorful monolithic buildings, Dakar is in fact in constant development and each of its districts tends to reflect a different style and focus, depending on its inhabitants and the dominating functions.

Dakar, A City in Constant Reinvention

Dakar is a city of constant development. From colonial times, and on, the capital of Senegal has seen a lot of shifts in its societal definition which has, in turn, affected its architectural and urban fabric. Ever since the French mandate which somewhat forced a shift of local living traditions into a more 'European' lifestyle, the wheels of change have been set in motion. Afterward, a notable post-colonial attempt at re-defining Dakar was inevitable. It came about in many ways, still seen today, and it built a city of mixed architectural languages that defies most visitors' expectations.

Though the renowned African mid-century modernism was certainly present in the years after Senegal's independence in 1960, this was mostly due to its popularity with practicing architects in the region, not its relevance for the capital's rebuilding efforts. The modernist approach, which was mainly seen in the public, institutional, and cultural buildings, and which persists today in a more undefined contemporary style, was always aimed at showcasing Dakar to the world. It did not, however, reflect the reality of the city's development nor the way its dwellers live.

In an effort to refocus on Dakar, some of our more recent ArchDaily coverage has highlighted the many development and design efforts that look to provide a better means of living to inhabitants.

CRA Unveils Adaptive Reuse Design for Turin's Palazzo Micca in Italy

CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, in partnership with real estate group IPI, has revealed plans to transform the iconic modernist Palazzo Micca in Turin, Italy. Originally the headquarters of RAI, Italy's national broadcaster, the 19-story building will undergo a comprehensive adaptive reuse project. A significant feature of the redesign is the creation of an elevated public plaza at 26.5 meters, offering views of Turin's Baroque rooftops, the surrounding hills, and the Alps. The project also integrates sustainable design principles by converting parts of the office spaces into residential units and reusing existing materials.

How Do Railings Elevate Landscape Design?

 | Sponsored Content

Regardless of the region, parks and public spaces offer a refreshing escape from bustling urban environments, providing a momentary pause from the fast pace of life. Designed for collective benefit, they serve as dynamic ecosystems where recreation and relaxation seamlessly integrate into the visitor experience. But what is the challenge in designing these spaces? Being perceptive enough to find the balance that meets diverse demands while ensuring accessibility, comfort, and safety. As Austrian-American architect Richard Neutra once said, "If you have to design for people, you have to observe them, understand them, and sympathize with them."

Within these environments, the dynamics within the 'interior' are particularly intriguing. Various activities unfold, and users exhibit diverse characteristics. Given the scale or dense vegetation of these spaces, winding paths and slopes are often used to connect different areas, creating complex routes. In this context, railing systems enhance continuity and provide guidance and safety along the intricate paths. Railings direct movement flow, ensuring users navigate the space comfortably, thereby significantly enriching their overall interaction with the built environment. This influence also shapes how these design elements affect the overall outdoor experience, which we will explore further.
