The design competition is aimed to strengthen the connection of the historic center to the surrounding - which is here specifically represented by the Ombrone river - by means of an urban greenway to be conceived into/along/through via de Barberi. This greenway
is not only a soft-mobility route, but also the connection from the city center to the river bank, serving residences, school, sports and commercial facilities. The design of the greenway is also meant to exploit: the opportunity to use public space through the design of green areas, including equipped ones; the insertion of furniture and facilities in correspondence with the major junctions of the street; improving road safety in an area lived by students and residents; the implementation and connection of the urban cycling network of the city of Grosseto with the network of naturalistic routes built up following the Ombrone river, creating a circuit of pedocyclable paths connected to the historic center (piazza de Maria).
The two-degree Design Competition was chosen by the Municipal Administration as a device to guarantee the quality of the project proposal, aimed to: acquiring design solutions for the future development of the city; promoting soft mobility, which allows citizens to Grosseto to reclaim some parts of the city now almost abandoned; enhancing the social and landscape potential already present in the area but, for various reasons including the economic crisis of 2008, not yet expressed.
