This is a symposium to discuss the future of bamboo in the Haitian built environment and is organised as a joint event by Newcastle University in the UK, the University of Pittsburgh, USA and the Wynne Farm Ecological Reserve, Haiti.
This symposium will provide a platform for a discussion about how lightweight, sustainable bio-based construction materials can find their way into the Haitian construction sector through architectural education. The focus on architectural education is to promote long term innovation by the next generation of local architects in Haiti to enfranchise latent local bamboo resources.
From 2014 to 2017 the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London ran a series of workshops in Haiti for the design and construction with bamboo. This symposium will also look at the legacy and impact of these workshops.
This website will act as a record of this discussion and a platform to network with information on bamboo in Haiti to support the future development of lightweight, sustainable construction which can help rural economies and ecologies and provide lightweight resilient materials to the Haitian constriction sector.
