A selection of architectural firms and practitioners from all over the world will be announced as part of the 2023 generation of ArchDaily's New Practices this Tuesday, December 13, on ArchDaily and its versions in Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese.
For the third consecutive year, ArchDaily launched in November an open call, across all seven sites, "to detect and showcase those who are taking architecture in its new direction", and to encourage new practices to share how they are facing the current challenges of architecture and cities.
"During the last century, our profession has followed a linear evolution since the breakthrough of modernism, but the growing pressures have laid out the perfect scenario to push architecture to take its next leap. We see an increasing number of architects questioning the way we organize and practice, seeking to have a wider, stronger, faster, and more scalable impact", explains David Basulto, ArchDaily Founder & Editor-in-Chief. "Through the blurry boundary that has become the former hard limit of the discipline, architecture is now opening. From one side it is branching out into other industries [...] and on the other hand, this opening is allowing an ever-growing number of people who want to be part of the revolution of the built environment, but who don’t necessarily have a formal background in architecture", he adds.
Highlighting practitioners, professionals, and startups that are providing innovative approaches, proposals, and solutions to these discussions is the goal of ArchDaily's New Practices, according to Nicolas Valencia, ArchDaily Network Editorial & Data Manager. "By encouraging startups to submit their applications, we are also reinforcing a core value: the discipline has increasingly become more diverse, heterogeneous, and flexible, and design is one of the many options architects might practice", says Valencia. In fact, startups have been selected in previous editions: Monograph (2020), Baupal (2021), Canoa (2021), and ICON (2021).
The jury was comprised of ArchDaily curators, editors, and managing editors, from Asia, Europe, and Latin America, who reviewed, discussed, and eventually chose the winners from over 200 submissions from the seven continents. And as happened in previous years, the selected firms represent a wide range of approaches, techniques, scales, and regions.
