Spatial Formations: Residential Spaces of Tbilisi

On 19th August 2021 the W2KSHOP collective releases its exhibition, Spatial Formations: Residential Spaces of Tbilisi in Kunstpunkt Berlin, Schlegelstraße 6.
The Spatial Formations project, initiated by the W2KSHOP collective, examines relationships between residents and their habitats. A Qualitative research which is based on eight prevailing dwelling types of Tbilisi, Georgia and is presented through films, texts, models, photos, diagrams and hand drawings.

The project was guided by the following questions: how is a building constructed and transformed by architects and non-architects? What are the social relations within a structure? How are property lines drawn? What kind of symbolic meaning do these practices incorporate? What can they state about the past and the present mentalities? What can we learn from analysing the tactics and strategies of improving one’s living spaces? How are the residents influenced in the times of crisis?

The first exhibition of the research material was shown during the Tbilisi Architecture Biennial in November 2020. Now Spatial Formations is coming to Berlin Mitte. In collaboration with c/o NOW and the University of the Arts, this exhibition marks a starting point for contrasting urban living spaces in various cities.
