Throughout the current global circumstances, we at Arts and Creatives have experienced first-hand the challenges that architecture students and graduates are facing in maintaining design motivation and securing roles in industry. This is why we decided to launch a competition solely for young architects and architecture students with the aim to enhance skills, raises awareness of topical design issues and prepare for the next step in the architectural journey.
In response to our current need for more localised travel, the competition challenge is to design a flat-pack traveling ‘pod’ no larger than 20sqm that can fit into a 1m x 3m bike trailer when disassembled. Participants are encouraged to express their personalities through the choice of programme, the pod could cater for any activity that you would wish to pack up and take with you when traveling, could it be painting on a mountain side or playing chess at a local reservoir? The choice of site for the pod can be anywhere you enjoy being, as long as it’s within cycling distance to you!
A suggested list of conscious, sustainable building materials is provided for participants to choose from, including straw panels, woven willow panels and scaffold poles, however the materials can be adapted to suite the country that the pod is based in.
The purpose of the competition is to consider the positive impact of choosing to build temporary mobile structures which have the lightest possible impact on the land and can have multiple uses, rather than permanent structures which will one day be knocked down and create more harmful waste. We also encourage participants to think with a circular economy mind-set when choosing materials and methods of construction to use. The submission is in the format of one A3 presentation board including the overall design and details of each material chosen.
