Cuban Architecture: The New Movement is our third virtual event in the series which was kicked-off with Chilean Architectural Design and Detrás del Muro (Behind the Wall). The festival highlights projects from the past 10 years and will include global panel discussions, documentary film premieres, and presentations from leading experts and artists from Argentina, Chile, Cuba, US. We are proud to be collaborating with Miami Center for Architecture and Design, American Institute of Architects and ArchDaily on our 10x10 Festival architectural series.
“Working with Copperbridge has given us an opportunity to connect with Architects in Cuba creating a wonderful exchange of ideas and creativity.” Cheryl H Jacobs, Executive Vice President. Miami Center for Architecture and Design
The Cuban Architecture event will be hosted by Mauro Reina, Ambassador from Switzerland in Cuba from the Richard Neutra House, a modernist architectural residence in Havana, the only tropical home he designed.
“From the Baroque architecture of Borromini, Maderno or Trezzini, through the Modernist Le Corbusier until the contemporary Botta, Herzog & de Meuron, Tschumi or Zumthor, Swiss architects have shaped, during centuries, Switzerland, and many cities around the world.
Cuba, and especially its capital, is a paradise for architecture. From the fortresses of the 16t h century to the modernist buildings, it is impossible to stroll or drive through the streets of Havana without admiring the heritage of so many gifted architects. One of the jewels of Tropical Modernism is the Swiss Ambassador’s Residence. The design was the 1958 winner of the Gold Medal from the College of Architects of Cuba, the building was designed by the American architect Richard Neutra, and its landscaped garden by the no less famous Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. We are excited to learn more about the young generation of Cuban professionals: The New Movement, and listen to their ideas and projects during the virtual event organized by the Copperbridge Foundation with the support of the Swiss Embassy in Cuba.”

Cuban Architecture: The New Movement
What’s it like to be an architect in Cuba?
“Architecture has always been a cornerstone for the Copperbridge Foundation, we strongly support architectural heritage, preservation and new movements. In the past 10 years we have focused on architecture all over Latin America and recently, on restoring our own 1926 Foundation building in North Miami. The panel we have assembled truly reflects a new wave of Cuban architecture steeped in the beautiful architecture found on the island reinterpreted with a modernist aesthetic in Cuba and abroad. As far as we know, there has never been a virtual panel like this before and we are excited that our event will have a global reach.” Geo Darder - Founder, Copperbridge Foundation
Cuba today is mostly made up of historic buildings including Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Colonial styles. What are architects in Cuba creating now? What inspires them? How are they working? This event is a panel discussion moderated by Diego Hernández from ArchDaily with architects in Cuba who are driving the new movement of design and construction. They will present some of their work and discuss what it is like to be an architect in Cuba today.
