UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design is now accepting applications for the 2020 Summer [IN]SITU: A Virtual Summer Institute in Environmental Design.
The Summer Institute gives participants the opportunity to test their enthusiasm for the material and culture of architecture, landscape architecture and sustainable city planning.
The Institute is geared towards post-baccalaureate participants with no previous experience in design, or experienced designers who wish to explore an aspect of environmental design outside of their primary discipline.
The Institute consists of four cohorts:
[IN]ARCH ADV is an advanced studio for current students or recent alumni of architecture programs. It places emphasis on an iterative process and deploys three recurring methods for making: analog drawing and photomontage, to connect the eye's critical observations to the hand's critical description; digital modeling, to explore conceptual ideas; and physical modeling, to develop and embody material ideas in model form.
[IN]ARCH is primarily concerned with fundamentals, investigating what it means to "speak" architecture through representation. It is designed as an introduction to studio culture and architectural discourse, and serves as a vehicle for further study in the field.
[IN]LAND introduces students to multiple scales and aspects of landscape architecture through rigorous inquiry and experimentation. Students develop a deep understanding of the methodologies of the field and a refined portfolio of design work.
[IN]CITY provides students with foundational skills in urban planning and policy methods as well as the tools to translate sustainability objectives into clear scopes of action. Alumni possess the critical, observational and analytical skills necessary for graduate study in the field.
Each cohort will experience an expanded definition of "studio culture" with an intensive curriculum that upholds the core learning outcomes of the Institute: building a network of like-minded peers; connecting to faculty and mentors; developing a competitive portfolio and grad school application; honing crucial software skills; earning a Certificate of Completion and credit on an official UC Berkeley transcript.
Need-based stipends are available.
