The Fundamental Design Build Initiative invites 10 early-career architects, designers, and engineers from around the world to San Jose, Costa Rica for a three-month summer residency. Over the duration of the program, participants will be exposed to all aspects of a built work of design including: site analysis, brainstorming, fundraising, project management, sourcing materials, pre-fabrication, onsite construction, public relations, and preparing publicity materials. Participants will be chosen through a competitive selection process and are invited to attend and participate at no cost to themselves beyond travel and per diem expenses. Accommodations are provided in the cultural center of downtown San Jose, Costa Rica.
Selection
Participants typically represent a variety of backgrounds and are selected on the basis of their interest, motivation, previous experience. If selected, you will receive accommodations and workspace in a shared studio. Design proposals will be presented in an informal critique setting throughout the duration with outside guest critics and formal presentations to local stakeholders. Local experts across a variety of disciplines - including architecture, design, sustainability, marketing, and branding, among others - will provide enrichment throughout the program. While in San Jose, you will have the opportunity to work intensively alongside other students and local professional designers and experts, share your home culture, and challenge your own assumptions about design and the communities it serves. Because of the international focus, participants will continue to flourish and grow as a network around the globe for years to come.
Eligibility
Application is open to current or recently graduated Bachelors or Masters students of architecture, design, or structural or environmental engineering programs world-wide. Space is very limited and selection will be made with an eye on international diversity, consistent with previous Fundamental groups. Participants are required to remain in San Jose during the entire three months, respecting an intensive work schedule.
