Let us come away together from this, for a bit, and try to figure out how it all seems from a distance. Let us put some distance between this and us, and see how this appears. And while we are at it, let us take a look at the perch as well.
This, that, the perch and us; is the long and short of everything we will explore
1. THIS
This is where we are right now, all of us. This is our city and our forest, our river and our sewer, our air and our smog, our home and our street, our love and our
pain, our sirens and our silence, our math and our faith and everything in between. This is what we have made, of what we have, and where we made it, and what we made of all of this.
2. THAT
That where this is not.
3. THE PERCH
The Perch is where we will come away together.
The Perch this time is a group of settlements in the Eco Zone of the Great Himalayan National Park, in south-central Himachal Pradesh.
We will study the perch as well, while we take a look at this, that and each other. The villages present well preserved Kath Kuni architecture, as part of the relationships people have established with their surrounds. We will conduct a detailed measured drawing exercise to document the built habitat, and employ other means to document the diurnal, seasonal, annual and generational repetitions-traditions.
4. EACH OTHER
We are a group of Architects, who want to come away for a bit, with some of you who want to come along. Alphabetically we are Dushyant Desai, Hemen Sanghvi, Prarthana Jagannath, Saurabh Mhatre & Tripti Nair. You can be anyone really, but the excuse to come away this time is the study of the Architecture and Habitat of the Perch, so its best if you are an Architecture Student from any academic year of such a course.
5. PRODUCTION
Both the measurement of the measurable and speculations on the immeasurable will be compiled.Measured drawings and repetition-tradition studies will be printed for an exhibition in Mumbai. There may be a presentation of work to an invited audience. Speculations on the immeasurable will be sown for yield in the future.
If you want to explore the perch or this or that, come along.
If you prefer the experience of a stunning natural setting, and the generosity of such habitats and their people in their food, hospitality and warmth, then maybe you should give us a shout out. If you do not prefer speculating on inconvenient immeasurable unknowns, think it over, but we feel it’s still worth a shot because therein lie the first stammers of what manifests measurably over time.
We use cinema, music both generously, in our exploration of ‘this’, so an interest in both will help, and if not, you can start with us.
It should be a lot of fun, responsibly, and hopefully with a sense of growing wonder for both the measurable and the immeasurable.
