The second issue of Room will reconvene in the Kitchen; a space that savors the possibilities of both cultural appreciation and cross contamination, serving basic sustenance and special occasions. Taste here is significant though subjective, with its stainless steel tongue wiped perpetually in an attempt to cleanse the palate. Nuanced residues of gender, class, labour, race, and climate cling to the cloth among germs and grains of salt.
The kitchen is a volume of complex geographies. Contents enveloped in their natural and synthetic skin's come together from landscapes distant and near, to land on the counters of the heart of the home, to rest briefly upon the convenience store shelving in the metropolis, and to sit longingly in the heated silver pans at the buffet on an empty stretch of highway.
This issue of Room provides a surface for preparing food for thought, in an aim of exploring the universal through the personal and circumstantial - encouraging a spectrum of texture and flavour.
Room Journal is an annual digest that explores a different distinguishable room and challenges its boundaries and demarcations, both material and immaterial. The co-disciplinary platform asks its contributors to reflect upon the kitchen through the production of new writings, photographs, drawings, and any other forms of visual representation. Edible submissions/performances are also encouraged for special events and lectures to take place in 2020.
Co-edited by Kalli Niedoba and Patrick Birch, Room Journal is an independent, nonprofit publication led by students at the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of British Columbia on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
