The Strelka Institute is currently accepting applications to the third and final year of their tuition-free multidisciplinary postgraduate programme — THE NEW NORMAL 2018/19.
The programme focuses on research and design for the city and explores the opportunities posed by emerging technologies for interdisciplinary design practices. It employs tools and approaches from a wide variety of disciplines and is developed in collaboration with a group of excellent Faculty: Benjamin Bratton, Lev Manovich, Liam Young, Keller Easterling, Metahaven, Etienne Turpin, Paul Fiegelfeld, Julieta Aranda, Ben Cerveny, Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby, Geoff Manaugh and many others.
The programme functions as a “speculative urbanism think-tank”, a platform for the invention and articulation of a new discourse and new models. During the intensive 5-months programme students will work in small teams to research and develop original speculative interventions and platforms. Urban design projects include spatial plans, but the Strelka programme also emphasizes strategy, cinema and software.
The Programme Director is Benjamin H. Bratton — sociological, media, design theorist and author based in California. Bratton is a Professor of Visual Arts and Director of the Center for Design at the University of California, San Diego.
In its third and final year, The New Normal will focus on three main themes: Algorithmic Governance, Inverse Uncanny Valley, and Human Exclusion Zones. More info about these themes can be found here: https://stre.lk/UjoU
In 2018/19, Strelka will continue looking eastward and will go to Japan on an international field trip. The researchers will look into Japan’s complex robotics industries and explore its fully automated landscapes, all the way to touring the Fukushima exclusion zone. More information regarding the Japan field trip can be found here: https://stre.lk/4qfI
The New Normal programme is free and includes a monthly scholarship.
